Guidance for Mentors
The Role of a Mentor

A mentor is often described as an “experienced and trusted adviser.” That’s exactly how we see this role.
As a mentor, you’ll use your experience to support someone earlier in their journey. This may involve:
  • Listening and asking thoughtful questions
  • Sharing knowledge, experience and professional insight
  • Offering guidance on career development and qualifications
  • Providing different perspectives
  • Being a sounding board and a constructive “critical friend”
  • Encouraging self-reflection and growth
  • Helping identify strengths and areas for development
  • Offering support, encouragement and appropriate challenge
Mentoring is about guiding rather than directing. While you’ll offer insight and support, responsibility for acting and moving forward sits with the mentee.

Skills and experience required to be a Mentor

Effective mentors often demonstrate:

Self-awareness
An understanding of your own strengths, development areas and leadership style.

Credibility
Professional experience and personal integrity that builds trust.

Accessibility
A willingness to commit time and attention to support a mentee.

Strong communication
The ability to listen well, ask meaningful questions and understand different perspectives.

Ability to empower
Creating a safe, supportive environment where mentees can explore ideas and grow in confidence.

Commitment to developing others
An interest in helping individuals progress, whether through formal or informal experience.

Open-mindedness and empathy
Being receptive to new approaches and respectful of different backgrounds, experiences and viewpoints.
We are hoping to launch this service in the future, and we are recruiting Mentors before we go live.
